THE DELAWARE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (DMNH) is renowned for its bird and mollusk collections serving the natural sciences research community, with the second largest bird egg collection in North America and the twelfth largest mollusk collection in the United States. With hands-on interactive exhibits inside and displays and educational nature walks outside, the museum is a very popular destination. Always wanting to make its collections more relevant to museum visitors, DMNH wished to create interactive exhibit settings that would allow museum personnel to “work on” collection specimens on the exhibit floors and simultaneously engage children and adults in the science and purpose of their work. This exhibit approach connects museum staff, scientists and curators with the public, making their natural history work relevant and timely for today.
