THE ASIAN-INSPIRED RESIDENCE EVOLVED as a replacement for an existing home set amid a Zen oasis of Japanese style plantings. Like its predecessor, the new home is reflective of Asian architectural traditions and places an emphasis on the relationship between interior spaces and exterior gardens. First floor living spaces of the Asian-Inspired Residence include the master suite and the Great Room and are directed inward toward a private garden courtyard wrapped on three sides by the plan of the house. The Great Room—a double height space with monumental timber posts, beams and trusses decoratively cut to reflect a Balinese design influence—features large sliding glass doors opening to panoramic views of the landscaping. The Asian design influence is expressed on the exterior of the house through deep overhanging eaves with timber brackets and decorative rafter tails along with timber details echoing those of the interior Great Room.
